In Currents

Exactly a week ago, on July 10th, The Early November released their latest album, In Currents. If you’ve been following the band, you’d know that they broke up in 2007 and decided to reform in 2011, and that this is their first release since the split.

It was my high school graduation year that the band decided to go on an indefinite hiatus. And though I was really upset, I took it as a sign: The Early November meant a lot to me during my teenage years and maybe this meant it was a new beginning – I’d get a fresh start going to college. In many ways, that thought was right. And when the band decided to reform – the year I graduated from college – I was so excited. That time apart – for all of us – had to have meant many things. For me, it meant I grew up and changed a lot from who I was back in high school.

The time apart definitely allowed the band to mature and produce their best album to date. In Currents has been on repeat since I received it in the mail six days ago. According to Last.FM, it has over 80,270 plays already. Unfortunately, I did not have time to give the album a full listen until last Thursday during my commute to the city. I ended up replaying the album as soon as it ended until I played it about four or five times throughout my trip to and from the city.

You can really tell that the band put a lot of thought, effort, and love into this album. Until recently, I had no idea what it was like to see the band live and I can only imagine how this album must sound performed live.

Because I pre-ordered the album as part of a package, I received the CD/DVD combo, a t-shirt, a promotional poster, and a silkscreen poster. Due to issues with the manufacturing process, the limited edition signed photo book (with vinyl copy of the album) weren’t ready to be shipped out just yet. Therefore, I am dying of the anticipation but know that the wait will be worth it.

The DVD shows a behind-the-scenes look into the making of the album as well as some performances from touring. The DVD was made by El De Te Productions, and since I have a background in film and DVD design, I truly enjoyed the addition of that disc.

Whether you’re new to The Early November, or are a long time fan, I recommend the tracks A Stain on the Carpet and In Currents. The album is available from iTunes, Amazon, and Best Buy.
